Abstract

Background Generalised anxiety is an anxiety disorder where someone experiences fears and worries about multiple things in daily life. A research done by Sherman A Lee, in China in 2020[3] found that there is an increase in generalised anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic especially on healthcare workers, however, research has never on medical students who has a better knowledge on COVID-19 which may increase anxiety during the pandemic. Aim The aim of this to investigate the difference in generalised anxiety index score in students of Pelita Harapan Faculty of Medicine before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method This study is an cross-sectional cohort cross-sectional paired numeric analytic comparative twice measured study for generalised anxiety before the COVID-19 pandemic and during the pandemic. The target samples for this study are students of the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Pelita Harapan who fulfills the inclusion criteria. Zung’s Self-Rating Anxiety Scale is used to measure generalised anxiety. Results are then analysed by SPSS using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test method with a confidence interval of 95%. Result Result show that there is a significant difference of generalised anxiety index with p<0.05 on the general sample population, on male samples and on female samples individually. During the pandemic, there is a significant difference between students who lives alone and the ones who lives with their families and between male and female students. However, before the pandemic there was no significant difference between the generalised anxiety index on male and female students. Conclusion The hypothesis made that there is significant difference in anxiety index before and during the pandemic on the general sample, on male samples and on female samples is supported. There is also a significant difference of generalised anxiety during the pandemic based on students’ living condition and on each gender. Before the pandemic, there was no significant difference between male and female students.
