Abstract
Bahasa Inggris adalah salah satu bahasa yang penting untuk dipelajari di sekolah. Peserta didik hendaknya menguasai empat keterampilan dalam berbahasa. Salah satunya adalah membaca, karena sebagian besar siswa memiliki keterampilan membaca yang rendah. Oleh karena itu, kebiasaan membaca dalam bahasa Inggris, motivasi membaca untuk membaca teks bahasa Inggris dan keterampilan kosa kata siswa dapat mendukung siswa untuk dapat memahami teks bacaan. Berdasarkan penjelasan di atas, makalah ini menyajikan tentang hubungan antara keempat variabel tersebut. Data pada penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari 56 siswa di SMA Stella Maris, kelas X. Materi ujian pemahaman bacaan dan penguasaan kosakata diberikan kepada siswa untuk mengukur tingkat pemahaman bacaan dan penguasaan kosa kata mereka. Selanjutnya, dua jenis kuesioner tentang kebiasaan membaca dan motivasi digunakan untuk mengukur kebiasaan membaca dan kondisi motivasi dalam membaca. Hasilnya kemudian dibandingkan untuk mengetahui hubungan antar variabel tersebut. Berdasarkan analisis korelasi yang dilakukan, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan antara penguasaan kosakata siswa dan pemahaman bacaan mereka, sedangkan tidak ada hubungan antara pemahaman bacaan terhadap kebiasaan membaca dan motivasi membaca. Akhirnya, diharapkan penelitian ini dapat membantu memberikan solusi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa dalam bahasa Inggris / English is one of the important languages to learn in school. There are four skills that should be mastered by learners. One of them is reading, because the students have lower skills in reading comprehension. Therefore, reading habit in English, reading motivation to read English text and students’ vocabulary skills can support the students to be able to comprehend the text. This paper presents about the relationship between the four variables. Data were collected from 56 students in Stella Maris Senior High School, grade X. The test items of reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery were given to the students to measure their level of reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, two kinds of questionnaires about reading habit and motivation were assigned in order to measure their reading habit and motivation condition. The results were compared to find out the correlation between those variables. The correlation analysis revealed that there was a correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension, whereas no correlation between reading comprehension to reading habit and reading motivation. Finally, it is expected that this research can help to give solutions on learning English in order to improve students’ reading ability in English
