Abstract

Background: Indonesia has a high number of foreigners entering the country due to
foreign friendly policies that attract foreign tourists, workforce, refugees, and
business investors. From healthcare perspective, cultural sensitivity and
competence are important aspects given the possibility of foreign patients entering
the Indonesian healthcare facilities. It is hence important to understand the
experiences of nurses during inter-cultural encounters with foreign patients.
Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of Indonesian student nurses
in caring for non-Indonesian patients and the meaning of these experiences to the
students. Methodology: This research was conducted through an interpretive
phenomenological analysis. Data were gathered from eight participants through
semi-structured online interviews. Result: Analysis of the data revealed four main
themes: (1) emotional responses, (2) communication, (3) psychosocial care, (4)
diversity in care, and (5) growth. Continuous support and training for nurses to
enable them to provide quality in a multi-cultural setting is recommended. In
addition, research regarding cultural and its role in healthcare delivery will also be
beneficial.
