Abstract

Generally known as the musical style that occurred in the twentieth century, serialism is a compositional technique based on a fixed series of all twelve pitches developed by Arnold Schoenberg. Total serialism is the advancement of this musical style that happened in the 1950s, which aims to formulate the entire elements of music, beginning from pitch, note value, and others. Many scholars believed that Olivier Messiaen’s piano composition, Mode de valeurs et d’intensites (1949), was one of the pioneers in total serialism. This research aims to perceive Mode de valeurs et d’intensites in accordance with the composer’s preferred musical language by thoroughly examining literature concerning Olivier Messiaen’s life in the 1930-1950s, his opinions on music, and Mode de valeurs et d’intensites, his musical work that represented the advancement of serialism. The outcome of this study shows how Messiaen was loyal to his own musical language in this seemingly serial piece.
