Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are the most common causes of deaths worldwide. Ischemic changes and arrhythmias may occur undetected in people with cardiovascular diseases. However, these can be identified with continuous electrocardiogram monitoring. Recent technologies allow continuous ECG monitoring outside the clinical setting to provide early detection and prompt treatment for the patients. Objective: This study was conducted to review and synthesize published research studies on the accuracy of wireless ECG monitoring. Method: This is an integrative review of literature using articles collected from seven online data bases: EBSCO, MedLine, ProQuest, PubMed, ClinicalKey, Science Direct, and Google Scholar using the search terms “accuracy” AND “ambulatory wireless” AND “ECG monitoring”. Result: The studies included in this review show that ambulatory wireless ECG monitoring devices have an accuracy rate of 79.4% to 99.62%. There are different factors that may increase or decrease its accuracy. Other advantages of this device that were identified include high specificity, high sensitivity, high predictive value, and enchanced comfort. There also several disadvantages and limitation of the device. Conclusion: The ambulatory wireless ECG monitoring devices can provide accurate detection of arrhythmias. It provides an option for users’ cardiac rhythm to be monitored while allowing more mobility and comfort.
