Background: Chronic kidney failure is a condition where there is a decline in kidney function for more than three months. ESRD (End State Renal Disease) is the last stage in kidney failure, and patients who have entered the ESRD stage must undergo hemodialysis or kidney transplantation. AVF is the most widely used access if the patient has a chronic dialysis plan. AVF cannulation is done using a needle measuring 15-17 G. This cannulation can cause pain and discomfort, especially the cannulation is a major cause of complications and failure of AVF. Reseacrh objectives: To identify the pain description of patients with chronic renal failure during AVF insertion / cannulation for hemodialysis along with factors that influence pain. Research methods: The study used a literature review with a simplified approach data analysis and used the OneSearch, EBSCO, Proquest, Pubmed, and Google Scholar databases and produced 12 articles in accordance with the specified inclusions. Results: The level of pain that most patients feel is at a moderate level, with several factors affecting pain such as factors ease and worsen pain. Recommendation: To reduce the pain of AVF cannulation, patients can use analgesic products just before canulation. Health workers are expected to be able to use pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management to help patients and hospitals are expected to provide analgesic products as a standard of service in the hemodialysis room.
