Abstract
Project-based Language Learning (PjBLL) is an active learning approach that uses
project as a media for students to explore and gain new knowledge through reallife or hands-on experience. For this research, PjBLL was adapted and adjusted to
Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (ILFS) context. Case study method
was used to learn how PjBLL encouraged productive language skills (speaking
and writing) of basic level ILFS students at XYZ language centre. Data collection
was done by doing classroom observation, documentation, interview and giving
questionnaire to 9 basic level ILFS students who took the February – May 2018
program at XYZ language centre. Further interview was done from August –
September 2018. However, only seven out of nine students were available for the
follow-up interview. Therefore, only data from these seven students were
analysed. The result shows that the application of PjBLL can encourage students‘
motivation and students‘ productive language skills, mainly speaking skill.
However, the students writing skill doesn‘t show much improvement. The result
of PjBLL evaluation indicates that students of basic level ILFS focus in improving
their speaking skill more than their writing skill. / Pembelajaran Bahasa Berbasis Proyek (PBBP) adalah suatu pendekatan
pembelajaran aktif yang memanfaatkan proyek sebagai media pemelajar untuk
mengekplorasi dan mendapatkan pengetahuan baru melalui pengalaman langsung
atau tangan pertama. Untuk penelitian ini PBBP diadaptasi dan disesuaikan
dengan konteks BIPA. Penelitian dalam bentuk studi kasus digunakan untuk
mempelajari bagaimana penerapan PBBP dapat mendorong keterampilan
berbahasa produktif (berbicara dan menulis) pemelajar BIPA tingkat dasar di
lembaga bahasa XYZ. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi kelas,
dokumentasi, wawancara, dan angket yang diberikan kepada sembilan pemelajar
BIPA tingkat dasar yang mengikuti program pada bulan Februari – Mei 2018 di
lembaga XYZ. Wawancara lanjutan dilaksanakan pada bulan Agustus –
September 2018. Tujuh dari sembilan pemelajar ikut serta dalam wawancara
tersebut. Oleh karena itu, data yang dianalisa adalah data dari ketujuh pemelajar
tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa PBBP berhasil mendorong
motivasi dan keterampilan berbahasa produktif pemelajar, khususnya
keterampilan berbicara. Akan tetapi, keterampilan menulis pemelajar tidak
menunjukkan banyak perkembangan. Hasil evaluasi pelaksanaan PBBP
menunjukkan bahwa para pemelajar BIPA tingkat dasar lebih mementingkan
perbaikan keterampilan berbicara mereka dibandingkan keterampilan menulis.
