Abstract

Background Body shaming behavior are a lot happened in daily life among the community and students. Body shaming behavior is an unpleasant experienced by individuals and seen as a negative things by others about their body shape. The effect of body shaming makes a negative self-image on students. Research objective to determine the relation of body shaming with student self-image. Research method uses a quantitative with a descriptive correlational design and cross-sectional approach, this research was conducted in April - May 2020. Instrument in this study used a body shaming and self-image questionnaires, vr have been tested with alpha cronbach 0.795 for body shaming and 0.811 for selfimage. Population in this study first year students with a total sample of 176 respondents who were calculated using the purposive sampling method. Results of univariate analysis showed 85,2% of students received low body shaming behavior and as many as 56,2% of students had a negative self image, statistical test results obtained p value 0,015> α 0,05 and somers’d value -0,257 which means there is a significant relationship between body shaming behavior with students self image with a negative correlation direction. Suggestions for students to maintain a high tolerance attitude and appreciate the difference to each other also the research is expected to be a reading material in developing science in the field of health.
