Abstract
Virtual learning is a learning method that uses electronic media and the internet as a learning tool. The application of virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic is a big challenge for Early Childhood Education. Finding an appropriate and efficient learning methods to improve various aspects of participants’ development is one of the obstacles in virtual learning program. STEM learning method can be one of the solutions to existing problems because it provides space for learning participants to explore freely and supports the participants' thinking skills. The purpose of the research conducted was to determine the impact of using STEM learning methods to improve participants’ critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as their engagement in learning. This research was conducted using the Classroom Action Research method with three cycles and conducted in nine meetings on virtual learning for children aged 3–4 years. The results of the participants' achievement were observed and assessed by the researcher with two observers using an assessment rubric and descriptive notes. The research conducted shows that STEM learning method, that is child-centered, uses learning materials that are close to the participants' daily lives, and provides space for participants to be directly involved in exploring and experimenting with learning activities, can improve of 3–4 year olds children’s critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as their engagement in virtual learning./Pembelajaran virtual adalah metode pembelajaran yang menggunakan media elektronik dan internet sebagai sarana pembelajaran. Adanya penerapan pembelajaran virtual karena pandemi COVID-19 menjadi sebuah tantangan besar bagi jenjang pendidikan anak usia dini. Pemilihan metode pembelajaran yang tepat dan efisien dalam meningkatkan berbagai aspek perkembangan partisipan menjadi salah satu kendala dalam kegiatan pembelajaran virtual. Metode pembelajaran STEM menjadi salah satu solusi akan permasalahan yang ada karena memberikan ruang bagi partisipan pembelajaran untuk bereskplorasi secara bebas dan mendukung kemampuan berpikir partisipan. Tujuan dari penelitian yang dilakukan adalah untuk mengetahui dampak dari penggunaan metode pembelajaran STEM dalam upaya meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis, kemampuan pemecahan masalah, dan keterlibatan partisipan dalam pembelajaran. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode Penelitian Tindakan Kelas dengan tiga siklus dan dilakukan dalam sembilan pertemuan pada pembelajaran virtual anak usia 3–4 tahun. Hasil pencapaian partisipan diobservasi dan dinilai oleh peneliti dengan dua orang pengamat dengan menggunakan rubrik penilaian dan catatan deskriptif. Penelitian yang dilakukan menunjukkan bahwa metode pembelajaran STEM yang berpusat pada anak, menggunakan materi pembelajaran yang erat dengan kehidupan sehari-hari partisipan, dan memberikan ruang bagi partisipan untuk terlibat langsung dalam melalukan eksplorasi dan eksperimen pada kegiatan pembelajaran, dapat meningkatkan aspek kemampuan berpikir kritis, kemampuan pemecahan masalah, dan keterlibatan partisipan dalam pembelajaran virtual anak usia 3–4 tahun.
