Abstract

Anxiety is one of the common problems in medical students and caused by several factors. Self-efficacy is personal beliefs of one’s capabilities to control human’s behavior, motivation and emotions and a cognitive factor which plays pivotal role to anxiety arousal. People with self-inefficacy doubt their capabilities and develop over-anticipation. Anxiety can impair goal-directed attention, concentration and working memory which are important domains for medical students. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation of self- efficacy to anxiety among preclinical medical students at Pelita Harapan University. This is a cross sectional study. Total subject in this study were 96 preclinical students Faculty of Medicine Pelita Harapan University batch 2018. Data were collected using the General Self-Efficacy (GSE) questionnaire to measure self-efficacy and Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-42) questionnaire to measure anxiety. Statistical analyses used in this study was Spearman’s correlation and data were analyzed by SPSS 25.0. From the correlation analysis between self-efficacy and anxiety, the result of correlation coefficient value is r = -0.427, p-value <0.001. There is negative correlation with moderate strength between self- efficacy and anxiety in preclinical students Faculty of Medicine Pelita Harapan University. The negative value describes the inversely proportional correlation. Thus, with increased self-efficacy, the anxiety will decrease.
