Abstract

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) is environmentally friendly method in producing asphalt mixture at a lower temperature when compared with producing Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixture. However, the lower temperature in mixing and compacting process makes WMA more susceptible to moisture damage like stripping. Stripping occurs due to the weakening of adhesion between bitumen and aggregates caused by moisture. Therefore, to improve the moisture resistance properties and mitigate stripping phenomenon in WMA, anti stripping agent (ASA) can be added to strengthen the adhesion between bitumen and aggregates. The compatibility between bitumen and ASA being used is to be in accordance with Bina Marga specification, which is a minimum of 80%. In this study, samples of WMA mixture are produced by foaming process using zeolite as additives. Samples are made with optimum bitumen content of 6.1%, measured from the total weight of the sample. The ASA being used is Wetfix BXE from Nouryon with four variations in concentration, namely 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, and 0.5%, measured from the weight of bitumen. Sample without ASA is also produced as control samples and for comparison. The optimum ASA concentration from the varying concentration is to be determined by evaluating how much aggregates is still coated by bitumen (coating ratio) after undergoing boiling water test (BWT). The coating ratio is inspected visually with digital image analysis using software Image J. Sample with higher adhesion property will exhibit higher coating ratio and sample with highest coating ratio is determined as sample with optimum ASA concentration. The results showed that the addition of ASA to the WMA mixture can increase the adhesion properties between bitumen and aggregates from 6.65% to 14.49% when compared to control samples. The optimum ASA concentration is 0.4% ASA for these samples resulted in the highest average coating ratio of 89.48%.
