Abstract

Soil subsidence on land has a major impact on any construction built above it. However, not all types of soil can be used in a certain construction project. One of the problems occurs in expansive clay soil type that has a high rate of shrinkage which can cause deformation that has the potential to damage the structure above it. To overcome this problem, it is necessary to give a stabilization effort or to give an improvement to the expansive clay soil type. One of the solution is the biogrouting technique, which is an attempt to stabilize the soil by harnessing microorganisms in the form of bacteria. Just like other living things, bacteria need nutrients to thrive. In this study, the bacterium Bacillus subtilis was used. B4 culture medium consisting of yeast extract, dextrose, and shellfish powder waste, was used as a source of calcium ions. Based on the titration test, the CaO content obtained in mussels was as much as 80.77%, while quantitatively the CaO level before and after incubation for 18 hours, an increase of 8.856% occurred. These bacteria play a role to bind to calcium ions so that a cementation process occurs which will form calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Through the cementation process, it is expected that the molecular bonds in the clay minerals will be more attached so that water doesn’t easily penetrate. To monitor the effect on the bonding power, the consolidation test was conducted. Based on the test during the 30th day, there was a reduction in the decrease in the soil sample from 0.131 cm to 0.0645 cm, and the falling head test based on the test during the 30th day, it was obtained a reduction in the permeability coefficient value from 1.575 x 10-6 cm/s to 4.173 x 10-7 cm/s, also the result of the free swell index showed a decrease in the value of expansive degree from 40% to 30%.
