Abstract

Hasil akhir ini juga menggambarkan bahwa penambahan polimer dengan kadar tertentu terbukti dapat meningkatkan kualitas campuran aspal, sedangkan penambahan yang tidak sesuai justru akan memberikan penurunan kinerja campuran aspal./Polymer Modified Asphalt (PMA) is a technology that has become a popular choice to combat the damages in a pavement structure, one of which is regarding moisture damage. The polymer acts as an adhesion promoter inside the asphalt mixtures, thereby increasing the mechanical properties of the mix and extending the service life of the pavement. In this study, the asphalt content used was 6.10% based on the test results of the optimum asphalt content between the three experimental grades consisting of 5,60%, 6,10%, and 6,50% of the total weight of the mixture. The type of polymer used was Superplast polymer with the dosage of 4%, 5%, and 6% of bitumen weight. The specimens were separated into two pre-condition setups, namely the dry and submerged samples, to compare the mechanical properties of both groups. The method used to measure the mechanical properties of the hot mix asphalt specimens was the semi-circular bending test (SCB) to obtain maximum stress, strain at maximum load, fracture energy, fracture toughness, flexibility index, and cracking resistance index of each sample. Based on the results of the SCB test, it was found out that the maximum increase in polymer performance was at 5% polymer content where the average results obtained for each parameter for both dry and submerged specimens were 54,6% and 16,1% at maximum stress, 18,9% and 9,4% at strain at maximum load, 68,5% and 22,7% at fracture energy, 54,6% and 16,1% at fracture toughness, 51,5% and 1,6% on the flexibility index, and 8,1% and 5,8% on the cracking resistance index. Conclusively, the polymer dosage of 5% bitumen weight has been selected as the optimum content for the hot mix asphalt against the moisture effect in this study. Another conclusion that has been drawn out from this study is that the use of unsuitable polymer dosages does not bring a positive outcome to the mechanical properties of the asphaltic specimens.
