Abstract

English teacher plays the crucial role to help students deal with the challenges in their English study. One of the challenges that the students face is the changes from face-to-face meetings to online learning that happen currently. That changes can make the students' emotions response negatively towards the English online learning process. From the biblical Christian worldview, the seats of all emotions are the human heart that should be preserved with all vigilance. Therefore, the Christian teacher needs to guide the students to guard their hearts with the word of God so that they can manage and use it rightly. This study aims to investigate ways to improve students’ emotional intelligence in the English online learning process and its benefits. The methodology used is the qualitative descriptive method and the data taken from the researcher's practicum portfolio. The results show that improving students’ emotional intelligence enables the students to cope with challenges in the English online secondary class and gives benefits to students’ study performances. It is recommended for English the teacher from the secondary level to apply these approaches to improve students’ emotional intelligence: creating a supportive learning environment, writing emotional topic activity, and applying group discussion activity.
