Abstract

Teacher’s role in drawing out and developing students’ talents and abilities as Imago Dei entails a necessity to guide students to own their learning, which can be promoted through Student-centered Learning Environment (SCLE). However, Teacher-centered Learning Environment (TCLE) exists when teachers just treat students as empty vessels to be filled with knowledge and information. Parental pressure also impacts students’ learning motivation to own their learning since many parents only drive students to gain perfect scores on report cards. Thus, this qualitative descriptive study aims to dig deeper teacher’s role in implementing SCLE and how it might promote student ownership of learning. The result shows that SCLE accomodates students’ talents and abilities as Imago Dei where teachers become students’ learning partners and managers for students by involving students; engaging, encouraging, and motivating students; and using authentic materials to guide students in owning their learning and also fulfilling God’s calling. It is recommended for schools to survey about SCLE from teachers’ and students’ perspectives to improve its implementation; for teachers to find and implement teaching and learning methods in SCLE that could improve student ownership of learning; and for further researchers to analyze specific impacts of parental pressure on students’ learning performances.
