Abstract
The Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) is a very unique semiconductor
laser diode because it operates in low current thus implied low power consumption
and during the fabrication process it can be tested. Therefore, VCSEL could replace
the conventional laser diode for certain applications. However, the cavity design of a
single-transversal-mode VCSEL is complicated and rarely found. This research will
explore the single-transversal-mode VCSEL design by using the Effective Index
Method (EIM). With EIM, the structural dimension of VCSEL could be reduced from
three dimensions into two dimensions. EIM used in this paper is a combination of one
dimension Transfer Matrix Method (TMM) and two-dimension Finite Element
Method (FEM). By using the mode solver of TMM and FEM, we can find the best
cavity design which will produce a single-transversal-mode VCSEL with Multi
Quantum Well (MQW) active medium. The cladding design is similar to Photonic
Crystal which consist of well arranged holes with the size of sub-micrometer to
micrometer. The EIM calculation will show a slight difference in core and cladding in
the typical structure of VCSEL MQW. Simulations perform in this study reveal that
single-mode VCSEL can be attained by adjusting the cavity parameter such as core
radius, the distance between holes / pitch in the cladding, the lattice pattern in
cladding, and trench structure. The simulations show that core radius is the most
influential parameter for the mode characteristic. For the typical VCSEL structure
based on GaAs materials under study, the core radius of 0.25 μm to 1.2 μm can create
a single mode VCSEL. Pitch size also influential for the mode characteristic. The
simulations also reveal that for single mode VCSEL, the maximum pitch size is 7 μm
in radius core size from 0.25 to 1.2 μm. / Sumber cahaya Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) sangatlah menarik
karena selain dapat beroperasi pada arus rendah, dapat juga dilakukan pengujian
selama proses fabrikasi. Oleh karena itu VCSEL bisa menggantikan laser dioda
konvensional untuk aplikasi tertentu. Namun desain cavity VCSEL bermoda
transversal tunggal tidaklah mudah dan masih jarang ditemui. Penelitian ini akan
membahas perancangan VCSEL bermoda tunggal. Dengan menggunakan Effective
Index Method (EIM), dimensi struktur VCSEL dapat diturunkan dari 3 dimensi
menjadi 2 dimensi. EIM yang digunakan menggabungkan Transfer Matrix Method
(TMM) 1 dimensi dengan Finite Element Method (FEM) 2 dimensi. Dengan
menggunakan program mode solver TMM dan FEM akan dicari desain cavity yang
menghasilkan moda tranversal tunggal untuk VCSEL dengan medium aktif Multi
Quantum Well (MQW). Desain cladding, mengikuti arsitektur mirip Photonic Crystal
Fiber (PCF) yang berlubang-lubang berukuran dari sub mikrometer sampai beberapa
mikrometer. Hasil perhitungan EIM menunjukkan perbedaan nilai indeks bias effektif
core dan cladding yang sangat kecil pada struktur tipikal VCSEL MQW. Simulasi
dalam studi ini menunjukkan VCSEL moda tunggal dapat diperoleh dengan
memainkan parameter cavity yaitu, diameter core, cladding, jarak antar lubang
cladding, pola lattice pada cladding, dan stuktur trench. Hasil simulasi menunjukkan
bahwa parameter radius core adalah yang paling berpengaruh terhadap sifat moda.
Untuk struktur VCSEL tipikal yang diteliti dengan bahan dasar GaAs, nilai radius
core antara 0,25 μm sampai kira-kira 1,2 μm dapat membuat VCSEL menjadi
bermoda tunggal. Sedangkan jarak antara lubang cladding juga dapat memberi
pengaruh pada sifat moda. Diperoleh, bahwa untuk struktur yang digunakan, ukuran
jarak antar lubang maksimum sebesar 7 μm pada radius core antara 0,25 sampai 1,2
μm akan membuat VCSEL menjadi bermoda tunggal.
