Abstract

Mental disorders are a matter of concern in Indonesia. Stigma against people with mental disorders (ODGJ) tends to be high in students which causes feelings of anxiety, fear, shame, and inhibits behavior to seek professional help. Empathy is known to reduce public stigma against ODGJ. This study aims to see the effect of empathy on public stigma towards ODGJ in undergraduate students. The measuring instruments used are the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and Beliefs Toward Mental Illness (BTMI). This study collected as many as 179 active undergraduate students aged 18 to 25 years. The results showed that there was no significant correlation between empathy and public stigma towards ODGJ (r(179) = -0.008, p > 0.05) and there was no effect of empathy on public stigma against ODGJ among undergraduate students. The results of the study are discussed further in the discussion section.
