Abstract
Tatung merupakan mereka yang terpilih oleh para dewa sehingga para manusia dapat berinteraksi secara langsung dengan para dewa. Selain bagian dari perayaan Cap Go Meh, para tatung juga merupakan bagian dari kepercayaan etnik Tionghoa di Indonesia karena hak istimewa yang mereka miliki untuk menjadi perantara dengan para dewa yang disembah. Perkembangan penelitian tentang tatung di Indonesia banyak berfokus pada konteks perayaan Cap Go Meh. Oleh karena itu, peneliti menggunakan penelitian kualitatif dengan metode Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) untuk menelusuri bagaimana para tatung membangun konsep diri dalam keseharian; di luar dari konteks Cap Go Meh. Pembentukan konsep diri terjadi sebagai implikasi dari interaksi simbolik yang terjadi oleh para tatung dengan dunia baru yang mereka geluti. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh ialah proses pembentukan konsep diri para tatung melewati setidaknya tiga tahap, yaitu pada proses awal, transisi dan keseharian. Proses awal melibatkan rekoleksi dari significant others untuk mengidentifikasi dewa yang merasuki diri mereka. Pada masa transisi, para tatung membentuk konsep diri mereka seturut perintah dan larangan serta melalui pengambilan keputusan untuk menjadi seorang tatung. Para tatung menjalani dan memaknai keseharian seturut dengan konsep diri yang terbentuk sebagai seorang tatung. / Tatung refers to those who are chosen by the gods to be the medium so that human can directly interact with the gods. Tatung is not merely part of the ritual celebration such as Cap Go Meh but also part of Indonesian-Chinese belief system since they have the privilege to be the spirit-medium. Many of the research of tatung in Indonesia focused in the light of Cap Go Meh. Therefore, this research focused on the other perspective which is how tatung build their self-concept by using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Self-concept is an implication of symbolic interaction between tatung and the new world in which they live in. The obtained results shown that the construction of self-concept proceeded in at least three stages, they are initial process, transition and daily life. The initial process involves significant others to identify the gods who choose them. In the transition period, tatung construct their self-concept according to the instructions and the decision that they made to become a tatung. Tatung live and interpret daily life in accordance with the self-concept which has been formed.
