Abstract

Domestic violence is currently one of the most pressing public health concerns, both globally and nationally. In Indonesia, the rates of domestic violence cases against women have continued to grow annually at an alarming rate. Adult attachment has been studied in the past for its association towards the unique psychological dynamics of victims. Therefore, this quantitative study aims to explore the role of adult romantic attachment as a predictor for domestic violence victimization among married women domiciled in the Greater Jakarta area. A total of 300 married women (Mage = 32.88; SD = 5.41) participated in the online survey where they indicated personal experience in close relationships and their spouses’ conflict tactics. The acquired data was statistically examined using hierarchical regression, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation. The study found that adult attachment is significantly associated with domestic violence exposure, hence may act as a meaningful predictor. Furthermore, analysis suggested that individuals with higher scores of attachment-related anxiety are more likely to experience domestic violence. Thus, highlighting that prevention of domestic violence victimization amongst married women can be achieved through an increased awareness of their retained primary adult attachment dimension.
