Abstract

The development of North Korea's nuclear weapons is not a new issue, but with the increase in its nuclear weapons capabilities under Kim Jong-un, it is certainly considered more dangerous. Despite the prevention efforts such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and various other efforts, North Korea under Kim Jong-un continued and increased its nuclear weapons. This study wants to see why North Korea continues to develop its nuclear weapons and what impact it has on the regional security conditions in East Asia. In this study, the author uses a descriptive method by relying on literature studies as a data collection technique, the data that has been collected will be analyzed using the qualitative analysis method of the Miles and Huberman model. The results of this study found that there was an international system that did not benefit North Korea as a small country in the region. In addition, the feeling of being threatened by the conditions in the East Asia region which is not conducive and full of tension makes North Korea feel threatened, then the presence of the United States in the East Asia region also encourages North Korea to continue developing nuclear weapons which it uses as their deterrence. Then, with the responses of other East Asian countries that increase their military strength, it is seen that they can trigger the response of other countries that are threatened to increase their military strength and indirectly create a security dilemma and also an arms race as an impact on East Asian regional security.
