Abstract

Indonesia is one of the largest textile dye waste producing countries in the world. Textile dye waste pollutes the waters and has a negative impact on the environment and health. Efforts to decolorize dyes with microorganisms such as fungi are one of the solutions to overcome textile dye waste in a more environmentally friendly manner. In this study, the isolation and identification of fungi originating from tempeh starter as potential decolorizing agents were carried out. Tempeh starter that is used for fermenting soybeans into tempeh contains various microorganisms which are generally-regarded-as-safe (GRAS) so that they are not toxic to the environment and living things. In this study, two fungal isolates from tempeh starter showed potential as decolorizing agents for textile dyes, which were known to be Acid Red 88 and Acid Violet 17. The main decolorization mechanism of the two isolates was thought to be bioaccumulation. Based on the colony and cell morphology, the two isolates were thought to be a mold from the Penicillium genus and a yeast.
