Abstract
Livestocks acquires nutrition from daily fodder, which is why the nutritional components of forages have to be recognized. Bekatul is a byproduct from the rice milling, and is often fed to the livestocks due to lower cost and is rich in fibers. Fibers are mainly divided into three components, hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin. These components are structurally complex, so bacteria is used to help degrading the complex fiber into a simpler form, and thus increasing the fiber digestibility in bekatul. This study was conducted to evaluate the ability of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain N1 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain SS34 in degrading fiber components. Methods such as Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and High Performance Layer Chromatography (HPLC) have showed that B. amyloliquefaciens strain N1 and B. amyloliquefaciens strain SS34 are able to degrade fibers into simple sugars. The TLC and HPLC method is used to determine simple sugars that are produced from fiber degradation in bekatul./ Hewan ternak memperoleh nutrisi dari pakan ternak sehari-hari. Oleh karena itu, kandungan nutrisi dari pakan ternak perlu diketahui terlebih dahulu. Bekatul adalah bahan pakan ternak yang berasal dari sisa penggilingan padi, dan umumnya diberikan pada hewan ternak karena lebih murah dan mengandung serat dalam jumlah tinggi. Serat umumnya dibagi menjadi tiga komponen, yaitu hemiselulosa, selulosa, dan lignin. Ketiga komponen tersebut memiliki struktur yang kompleks, sehingga diperlukan bantuan bakteri untuk mendegradasi serat yang kompleks menjadi lebih sederhana. Dengan demikian, kecernaan serat di dalam bekatul dapat meningkat. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengevaluasi kemampuan Bacillus amyloliquefaciens N1 dan B. amyloliquefaciens SS34 dalam mendegradasi komponen serat. Metode berupa Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) dan High Performance Layer Chromatography (HPLC) menunjukkan bahwa B. amyloliquefaciens N1 dan B. amyloliquefaciens SS34 dapat mendegradasi serat menjadi gula-gula sederhana. Metode TLC dan HPLC dilakukan untuk menentukan gula-gula sederhana yang terbentuk dari degradasi serat di dalam bekatul.
