Abstract

Kulit merupakan bahan yang sangat sering digunakan dalam pembuatan berbagai macam produk. Namun, banyak yang tidak menyadari bahwa bahan kulit asli maupun kulit sintetis merupakan bahan yang tidak ramah lingkungan atas proses pengolahannya dan juga siklus hidupnya. Proses penyamakan kulit menggunakan bahan kimia yang beracun bagi lingkungan, dan kulit sintetis tidak berkelanjutan karena bahan dasar yang digunakan adalah plastik. Meskipun begitu, masyarakat tetap menggunakan bahan-bahan ini, karena sulitnya mencari alternatif dari bahan kulit ini. Maka, dilakukanlah eksplorasi material pada pembuatan kulit sintetis yang ramah lingkungan berbahan dasar gelatin dengan tambahan kulit singkong sebagai penguat bahan dan unsur inovasi. Bahan ini diharapkan dapat menjadi alternatif bahan kulit yang ramah lingkungan pada seluruh proses pengolahannya. Tas selempang dipakai sebagai produk hasil akhir untuk menjadi opsi pengaplikasian bahan dengan metode pengolahan yang sangat luas. Produk diharapkan dapat menjadi langkah utama untuk membuat gaya hidup yang lebih hijau oleh masyarakat Indonesia./ Leather is a common material often used in all types of products. However, many people don’t realize that leather and its synthetic counterpart are toxic to the environment for its making process and life cycle. Leather tanning uses a lot of chemicals that are toxic to the environment, and synthetic leather is not a sustainable material as it is made from plastic. Even though the effects are clear, people still use these materials, due to the lack of leather alternatives. So, a material exploration of environmentally friendly synthetic leather with the main ingredients of gelatin and cassava peel is made as an effort to make an innovation to the material. This material is expected to be an alternative to leather that is more environmentally friendly throughout the process. A sling bag is produced as the final product as it showcases a wide variety of its material processing method. Product is expected to be the first step to a greener lifestyle for people in Indonesia.
