Abstract

Asylum is a place of refuge that is facilitated by local institutions for refugees by providing protection and temporary residence in that place. However, in general, the asylum building only pays attention to the basic needs of food and housing and does not pay attention to the mental health of the refugees, 6 out of 10 refugees are sufferers of post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. The field of architecture offers the concept of atmospheric architecture, where the concept can be a strategy in healing mental illness through sensory in humans. The purpose of this research is to accommodate refugees temporarily living in Indonesia to explore using an atmospheric architectural approach in healing methods that architecture can contribute to. This research was conducted using literature study methods, precedent studies, and prototyping experiments. Literature study was conducted to study the characteristics of asylum required by refugees, and architectural aspects of the atmosphere. Analysis of the precedent studies carried out on the sanctuary as well as atmospheric architectural buildings. Experiments and prototyping are carried out to sort out suitable strategies as sensory stimuli to users regarding materials, shapes, visuals, and others. The design process begins with site selection and site analysis. The macro-scale design focuses on the asylum requirements needed against the needs of refugees, programming and surrounding residents. While the micro design scale focuses on the strategy of applying atmospheric architecture as a sensory stimulus in the sanctuary.
