Abstract

Paving block is one of the most widely used construction materials, but it is made from materials that cannot be recycled or renewed. Meanwhile, in other construction processes like marble production, waste is generated and adds to pollution problem. Therefore, this study is conducted to counter the above problem by utilizing marble ash waste as a substitute for sand in paving blocks. This study aims to find the percentage of marble ash in paving blocks that can produce compressive strength that meets the requirements of paving blocks based on the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). The tests conducted in this study are the compressive strength test (7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 28 days, and 56 days) absorption test, and comparing the weight of the sample. The cement:sand mixture used in this study was with a weight ratio of 1:2 with the marble ash waste as part of the sand. The ratio of water used is 40% of cement. The results of the compressive test showed that the substitution of sand with 10% marble ash had the highest compressive strength of 31.8 MPa on day 28. The results of the compressive test on day 56 did not show significant increase in strength from day 28. This compressive strength result met the requirements of SNI for paving block that can be used for a parking lot or garage. The weight of the test object without soaking showed that the substitution of sand with 10% marble ash is the heaviest with an average weight of 284.57 grams. For the absorption test, sample was immersed in water, oil and oil on the 14th day and then weighed and tested for pressure on the 28th day. From the absorption test, sample with 10% marble ash substitution had a water absorption of 1.57 %, 0.38% oil, and 0.56% oil. This absorption rate is higher than the specimen without marble ash substitution, but still within the SNI requirements of 3% maximum for water absorption.
