Abstract

Music is part of human life. Studies show that music influences psychological, cognitive, behavior, and emotion sides of human being. Research shows that music also influences students‘ performance on reading comprehension test and test anxiety level. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of classical and personal preference music on students‘ reading comprehension test performance and test anxiety level at grade XII SMAK 4 PENABUR Jakarta. The experiment design of this study is Pretest Posttest NonRandomly Assigned Design. The students in experiment group get a treatment that is listening to classical music fifteen minutes before and while doing reading comprehension test. Students in another experiment group get a treatment that is listening personal preference music fifteen minutes before and while doing reading comprehension test in English class. Mean obtained from pretest and posttest of experiment class will be compared with mean from pretest and posttest of control class to explain whether or not they are statistically different. The Study shows that classical and personal preference music influence students‘ reading comprehension performance and test anxiety. Study also shows that there is negative correlation between students‘ test anxiety and reading comprehension performance. / Musik merupakan bagian dari kehidupan manusia. Banyak penelitian menunjukkan bahwa musik memiliki pengaruh terhadap sisi psikologis, kognitif, tingkah laku, dan emosi manusia. Penelitian juga menunjukkan adanya pengaruh musik terhadap hasil tes membaca komprehensif dan tingkat kecemasan dalam menghadapi dan menjalani tes. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari apakah musik klasik dan preferensi pribadi berpengaruh terhadap hasil tes membaca komprehensif Bahasa Inggris dan test anxiety siswa kelas XII SMAK 4 PENABUR JAKARTA. Desain yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Pretest Posttest Non-Randomly Assigned Design. Siswa dalam satu kelas eksperimen menerima perlakuan yaitu mendengarkan musik klasik selama lima belas menit sebelum dan selama mengerjakan tes membaca komprehensif. Siswa dalam satu kelas eksperimen yang lain menerima perlakuan yaitu mendengarkan musik preferensi pribadi selama lima belas menit sebelum dan selama mereka mengerjakan tes membaca komprehensif dan menulis dalam kelas Bahasa Inggris. Data rata-rata nilai pretes dan postes kelas eksperimen akan dibandingkan dengan data rata-rata nilai pretes dan postes kelas kontrol untuk untuk melihat apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan secara statistik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa musik klasik dan preferensi pribadi berpengaruh terhadap hasil tes membaca komprehensif dan test anxiety. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan adanya korelasi negatif antara test anxiety dan hasil tes membaca komprehensif.
