According to the United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names in August 2019, Indonesia has 16.056 islands with a sea area of 5.8 million square kilometers and a coastline of 99,093 square kilometers. Suku Laut is one of the traditional tribes of Malay descent, an ancient tribe that has existed since the time of the Malay Kingdom. We know that Suku Laut lives a nomadic lifestyle in the ocean, and usually adjust with the weather conditions. The people of Suku Laut can survive in a small boat, or known as “kajang”. The boat named “kajang” is the symbol of a family unit because they live there. The coastline has become one of the living sources that unites the Suku Laut. This documentary film is one of the effective ways to introduce and bring back the identity of Suku Laut, especially from the historical and cultural aspects. This final project will be carried out through research, observation, interviews with related parties, and will be in a form of short documentary film that focuses on cultural identity to local wisdom of Suku Laut. The writer hopes that the society could add the knowledge about the people in coastal areas of Indonesia, especially the marine sea through this documentary film.
