Abstract
Diabetes mellitus in Indonesia has reached 19.5 million sufferers which puts Indonesia in fifth position in the world with the highest number of people with diabetes mellitus in 2021. Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by hyperglycemia and in its treatment there are several dangerous side effects. Therefore, alternative medicine from plants has been developed, especially those containing flavonoids such as melon seeds (Cucumis melo L.). The melon seed extract which had been macerated using 70% ethanol and was tested on mice (Mus musculus) which had been induced by glucose at a dose of 50 mg/20g BW, 100 mg/20g BW, and 150 mg/20g BW orally and with a comparison of metformin. The 70% ethanol extract of melon seeds contained active compounds, namely flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and terpenoids. Melon seed ethanol extract could significantly reduce blood glucose levels with dose of 50 mg/20gBW, 100 mg/20g BW, 150 mg/20gBW with the greatest decreasing dose is 100 mg/20gBW.
