Abstract
Excessive exposure to sunlight, especially UVB too long, can cause skin cancer, skin rash, premature aging, redness and sunburn. Sunscreen is one solution to protect the skin from radiation and the negative effects of UV rays. The amount of ability of sunscreen can be determined by the value of SPF (sun protecting factor). Green betel leaf (Piper betle L.) contains flavonoid compounds that act as antioxidants and sunscreens. This study aims to determine the potential of sunscreen cream 96% ethanol extract of green betel leaf through the determination of the SPF value and to determine the effect of variations in the 96% ethanol extract of green betel leaf in the formulation of sunscreen cream on the SPF value. The sunscreen cream formula was made with 4 variations in the concentration of green betel leaf extract, namely F0 (0%), F1 (0.1%), F2 (0.3%), and F3 (0.5%). The results obtained the SPF value with the highest average in the F3 formula with a green betel leaf concentration of 0.5% and an in vitro SPF test concentration of 8,000 ppm. Statistical test of SPF value using One Way ANOVA test followed by Post Hoc Tukey HSD test with 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). Formula F3 meets the requirements for topical sunscreen cream preparations after the cycling test stability test includes the requirements for homogeneity (homogeneous), has an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion type, meets the pH standard for topical cream preparations (5.73±0.21), standard adhesion test (1.64±0.10) and spreadability (6.30±0.63), but not stable in the centrifugation test due to phase separation.
