Abstract

Millennials have become the dominant workforce and researches revealed that millennials have brought changes into workplace in terms of communication, yet very few researches focusing on communication competence of millennial employees. Most of the topics of communication competence researches centered on intercultural context, professional development, or team’s collaboration. On the other hand, creative industries in Indonesia have generated start-ups run by millennials. However, there are still lack of researches on millennials working in start-up. Most researches about millennials in Indonesia are discussing millennial’s communication behavior in social media. From the explanation above, hence the research question of this thesis is how is communication competence demonstrated by millennial employees in start-up environment? and to find the answer, this research refers to previous literatures on millennial and communication competence, using Theory of Communication Competence and ethnography. Finally, this research has found four findings and one of which is that millennial employees from C-level and Team Leader category demonstrated effective and appropriate communication competence in the context of start-up environment, while Staff category showed moderate effectiveness and less appropriate communication competence for formal situation in start-up workplace. / Generasi milenial semakin mendominasi populasi angkatan kerja dan telah dilakukan penelitian-penelitian yang mengungkapkan bahwa milenial membawa perubahan pada cara berkomunikasi di dunia kerja, tetapi masih minim topik yang menekankan pada kompetensi komunikasi karyawan milenial di tempat kerja. Kebanyakan penelitian tentang kompetensi komunikasi mengambil konteks antarbudaya, berfokus pada pengembangan profesi, atau pada proses kolaborasi tim. Di sisi lain, industri kreatif di Indonesia melahirkan berbagai usaha rintisan berbasis digital atau yang biasa disebut start-up yang banyak dijalankan oleh generasi milenial, namun masih minim penelitian di Indonesia tentang generasi milenial di tempat kerja start-up. Penelitian-penelitian tentang milenial di Indonesia lebih banyak menyoroti perilaku generasi milenial di media sosial. Dari uraian di atas, maka yang menjadi pertanyaan penelitian dalam tesis ini adalah bagaimana kompetensi komunikasi didemonstrasikan oleh karyawan milenial di lingkungan kerja start-up? dan dalam menjawabnya, penelitian ini berangkat dari hasil-hasil penelitian terdahulu tentang generasi milenial dan kompetensi komunikasi. Kemudian peneliti menggunakan Teori Kompetensi Komunikasi dan metode penelitian etnografi untuk menggali data secara lebih mendalam. Pada akhirnya, tesis ini menghasilkan empat temuan, dan salah satu diantaranya adalah bahwa karyawan milenial dari kategori C-level dan Team Leader menunjukkan kompetensi komunikasi yang efektif dan sesuai dengan konteks lingkungan kerja start-up, sementara kategori Staf mendemonstrasikan kompetensi komunikasi yang cukup efektif namun terkadang kurang sesuai dengan situasi kerja yang formal.
