Abstract

During the field experience in a private Christian school in Bogor, it was found that the grade 9 students exhibited selective behavior to an extent where they failed to collaborate within teacher-assigned groups. This behavior is not encouraged by the Scripture as humans are called to love one another as they love themselves and to live as interdependent beings. Thereby, this research paper aims to analyze and identify the factors that drive the selective behavior, possible ways to shape collaboration within the hearts and minds of the students, and to what extent grouping helps to shape collaboration using qualitative-descriptive method. No pre-existing friendship, lack of trust and acceptance, and bad experience were discovered as the factors that drive the selective behavior. Other than that, some collaborative grouping strategies, especially group work helped to shape collaboration within the mind aspect. However, there was no significant development within the heart aspect. It is suggested for Christian English teachers to to help the students to practice their calling as an image of God who are interdependent by encouraging collaborative activities within heterogenous grouping, training students to work cooperatively, structuring groups for positive interdependence.
