Abstract
OR:6,500; CI 95% = 2,306 – 18,320)/Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition where stomach contents rise up into the esophagus. One of the risk factors that cause GERD is obesity. One of the mechanisms that trigger GERD is that obesity increases intra-abdominal pressure which can interfere lower esophageal sphincter (LES) function resulting acid reflux into the esophagus and can manifest as a burning sensation in the chest (heartburn) and bitter taste in the mouth (regurgitation). This research finds out whether there is a relationship between obesity and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The hypothesis to be proven is that there is a relationship between obesity and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in praclinical medical studentsof Pelita Harapan University. This research used a cross-sectional study with a sample of 129 medical students at Pelita Harapan University, which was conducted using simple random sampling and met the research criteria. Collecting data using body mass index and GERD-Q questionnaire. The results of the study were analyzed using the chi square test and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 26.0 program. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between obesity and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in praclinical medical students of Pelita Harapan University (p-value=0.001 , OR:6,500; 95% CI = 2,306 – 18,320)
