Abstract

Vocabulary knowledge is an important aspect of language as it plays significant role in communication and has to be mastered by language learners. However, based on the observation in grade XI of a Christian schools in Toraja, the students still had problem in vocabulary. Therefore, this research aimed to know whether the implementation of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition improves students’ vocabulary knowledge and its steps to improve students’ vocabulary knowledge. The research was a Classroom Action Research. The steps of the research were issue identification, data collection, action planning, plan activation, and outcome assessment. The subjects for the research were 28 students of grade XI in one of Christian schools in Toraja and it was conducted from September 5, 2018 to October 3, 2018. The findings showed that students’ vocabulary improved after the implementation. The data from the first and the second plan activation showed that the students’ vocabulary knowledge increased as much as 13,71%. The steps which improved students’ vocabulary knowledge were: dividing students into groups; distributing text; pronouncing the words; guessing the meaning; practicing to use the words; summarizing the finding; presenting the finding; having a test individually. / Pengetahuan kosakata merupakan aspek penting dalalm bahasa memiliki peran penting dalam komunikasi dan harus dikuasai pelajar bahasa. Namun, berdasarkan pengamatan di kelas XI di salah satu sekolah Kristen di Toraja, siswa masih mengalami masalah terkait kosakata. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah penerapan Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition meningkatkan pengertahuan kosakata siswa dan langkah-langkahnya yang dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan kosakata siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas. Adapun langkah penelitian yaitu identifikasi masalah, pengumpulan data, perencanaan tindakan, pelaksanaan tindakan, dan asesmen luaran. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah 28 siswa kelas XI di salah satu sekolah Kristen di Toraja dan penelitian ini dilaksanakan pad a 5 September hingga 3 Oktober 2018. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan kosakata siswa meningkat setelah dilakukannya penerapan. Data dari pelaksanaan tindakan pertama dan kedua menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan kosakata siswa meninkgat sebesar 13,71%. Langkah yang meninkgatkan pengetahuan kosakata siswa adalah: pembagian kelompok; pembagian teks bacaan; pelafalan kata; menebak arti; menggunakan kata dalam kalimat; meringkas hasil diskusi; mempresentasikan hasil diskusi; dan tes secara individu.
