Abstract
English is recognized as an international language that used in all corners of the world in international activities or event. In Indonesia context, which consists of hundreds of regional languages, learning English as a foreign language still gives students a different perception especially in the context of senior students at school X Lampung. Students still focused on using Javanese and Indonesian. Therefore, this paper aimed to find out the students’ language attitudes in learning English and to know the teacher’s role to help developing students’ language attitude. In achieving the purposes, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. In the diversity of languages, the Bible emphasizes that every language has purposes, and no language is meaningless. Based on the results of the study, students showed negative language attitudes such as being passive, assuming that learning English is difficult and feeling incapable. This situation directs the teacher to carry out the role in motivating students to learn the foreign language. Suggestions are given to teachers to help students understand the importance of having a positive attitude in learning foreign languages so that they are motivated and have a desire to learn. / Bahasa Inggris diakui menjadi alat komunikasi dipenjuru dunia dalam kegiatan atau aktifitas bersifat internasional. Dalam konteks keberagaman bahasa di Indonesia yang terdiri dari ratusan bahasa daerah, belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing masih memberi persepsi atau pandangan tersendiri bagi pembelajar secara khusus dalam konteks siswa SMA di sekolah X Lampung. Siswa masih berfokus menggunakan dan menguasai bahasa Jawa dan bahasa Indonesia. Oleh karena itu, tulisan ini ditujukan untuk mengetahui sikap berbahasa yang dimiliki siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dan untuk mengetahui bagaimana sikap berbahasa yang dimiliki siswa telah berkembang. Dalam mencapai tujuan penelitian, peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Dalam keberagaman bahasa, Alkitab menekankan bahwa setiap bahasa itu punya tujuan dan tidak satupun bahasa yang tidak memiliki arti. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, siswa menunjukkan sikap berbahasa yang negatif seperti pasif dalam pembelajaran, merasa malu untuk praktik didalam kelas, menganggap bahwa belajar bahasa Inggris sulit dan merasa tidak mampu. Hal ini mengarahkan guru untuk menjalankan perannya dalam memotivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa asing tersebut. Sehingga saran diberikan kepada guru untuk menolong siswa memahami pentingnya memiliki sikap positif dalam belajar bahasa asing sehingga termotivasi dan punya keinginan untuk belajar.
