Abstract
Vocabulary has important role in English learning. Without having sufficient vocabulary knowledge, students will find it difficult to understand a word in English, speak using English, write a sentence using English, and translate it into students’ first language. It can be said that vocabulary is a foundation of language skills. However, there was a main problem appeared during the research in one of Christian schools in Lampung in grade X students’ vocabulary knowledge. In order to overcome the problem, the researcher implemented Games Method which was considered as the proper method to improve grade X students’ vocabulary knowledge. The research method used was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research was conducted at one of Christian schools in Lampung with 11 students of grade X as the subjects of the research. The research started from August 20, 2018 to October 29, 2018. The data collected using various instruments, such as reflective journal, teacher mentor observation sheet, tests, and lesson plan. The result shows that students’ vocabulary knowledge is improved after the implementation of Games method as much as 27% based on students’ minimum passing grade. In conclusion, Games method can improve students’ vocabulary knowledge. / Kosa kata memiliki peranan penting dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Jika para siswa tidak memiliki pengetahuan kosa kata yang cukup, siswa akan mengalami kesulitan untuk memahami sebuah kosa kata dalam Bahasa Inggris, berbicara menggunakan Bahasa Inggris, menulis sebuah kalimat dalam Bahasa Inggris dan menerjemahkannya kedalam Bahasa pertama. Dapat dikatakan bahwa kosa kata adalah sebuah fondasi dalam keterampilan berbahasa. Namun, tedapat sebuah masalah utama yang muncul selama penelitian di kelas X di salah satu sekolah Kristen di Lampung, terkhusus yaitu pengetahuan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris siswa. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, peneliti menerapkan metode Games sebagaimana metode ini telah dipertimbangkan sebagai metode yang paling tepat untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas X. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada salah satu sekolah Kristen di Lampung dengan subyek penelitian sebanyak 11 siswa kelas X. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan mulai dari tanggal 20 Agustus 2018 hingga 29 Oktober 2018. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan beberapa instrumen yang berbeda, yaitu jurnal refleksi, lembar observasi guru mentor, tes, dan Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran (RPP). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris siswa meningkat sebesar 27% setelah penerapan metode Games berdasarkan Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (KKM) siswa pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Sebagai kesimpulan, metode Games dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris siswa.
