Abstract

Health facilities in underdeveloped regions present their own challenges in terms of research, especially regarding the work engagement of health workers, in this case, emergency physicians. Adjustments to existing models are needed to obtain accurate responses. Patient centricity as a new term in healthcare is the predicted variable. This study aimed to examine the effect of the antecedents of work engagement on patient centricity in emergency physicians who worked at hospitals in underdeveloped regions in Indonesia. A quantitative survey was conducted through a purposive sampling technique to collect data from hospitals in East Nusa Tenggara. The survey resulted in 183 responses, which were analysed through partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The direct influence on work engagement was found to be the strongest from physician autonomy and public service motivation. It was found that work engagement positively and significantly predicted patient centricity. The PLS-Predict resulted in large predictive relevance for this model. This study has implications for policymakers and hospital management in developing personal and job resources in optimizing patient centricity through work engagement and will show a new approach where patient centricity is seen as work engagement and can be applied in a larger population of physicians.
