Abstract
Language development can be increased by interaction among individuals. Group work is a method to learn EFL. However, students’ preference to work with and not trusting teammates found in group work and hinder them to achieve a goal of the group. Ideally, working in group sharpens students. Proverbs 27:17 emphasizes that be a better person, people need to be rubbed off by others. Thus, this research aims to know opportunities and challenges in learning EFL through group work. This research is descriptive qualitative. The instruments used in this research are researcher’s reflections, students’ reflection, and interview. The findings are the opportunities in using group work are promoting students’ vocabulary, building cooperative students, togetherness in learning, learning English is less boring, building responsible leaders, and practicing love and serving others. The challenges are competitive students, students’ preference to work with, smart students tend to be dominant and selfish, and the class is noisier. The researcher recommends English teachers to establish rules and consequences, deliver the essence of group work before the group work, and consider students grouping. For the next researchers, development of students’ language proficiency through group work is highly recommended to dig deeper.
