Abstract

Writing as an intellectual work shows someone’s mastery of a material. Therefore, students are expected to produce good writings. However, some students found it difficult in writing because they were lack of structural thinking skill in organising their ideas. In fact, students are expected to organize their ideas accordingly. Particularly when they write about directed writing, they have to respond to the given prompts. That is why, teacher’s expectation is very important to guide students in writing. This paper mainly discusses about teachers’ expectations in writing, especially directed writing and narrative. Teachers expect students to organize their ideas and respond to the given prompts. The expectation is set by telling them in the first meeting and being consistent. Teachers communicate the expectations verbally and through the way they treat students. Moreover, writing as an intellectual work can be used to glorify God as an act of stewardship and worship. Therefore, the role of English teachers is very important to guide students in achieving the expectations. Data was collected during one-month practicum in XYZ school, grade VIII & X, by interviewing four English teachers.
