Abstract

Despite growing leadership opportunities, women remain disproportionately underrepresented in the global economy. The Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations acknowledge gender equality as one of the most relevant issues to address to live a flourishing life in the world today. Notwithstanding the fact that a number of women have achieved prominence as top managers of their organizations, the patriarchal culture is still pervasive in Indonesian local wisdom. A company needs to be profitable to continue operating. Profitability may be impacted by factors such as gender diversity in top management through the representation of women. The purpose of this research is to examine the relation of women’s representation in top management to profitability of LQ 45 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. There are two independent variables used in this research: women’s proportion in top management and women’s presence in top management. The dependent variable used is profitability proxied by return on assets, with firm size as mediating variable. There are 31 samples out of 45 companies during 2019 – 2021 that was chosen through quantitative method with purposive sampling technique and secondary data collection. This research utilized SPSS 26 to conduct descriptive statistics, path analysis, classical assumption tests and goodness of fit. The results indicated that women’s proportion in top management directly have a significant relation to profitability, but indirectly have an insignificant relation to profitability through firm size. Meanwhile, women’s presence in top management directly and indirectly through firm size have insignificant relations to profitability.
