Abstract

Teaching and learning processes supposedly designed to make students engage because the engagement of students plays an important role in terms of determining the quality of the learning. However, in this imperfect fallen world, it is possible to encounter student disengagement issues in the learning process just like what happened in grade 1 students in one of the Christian schools in Jakarta Pusat. Students will disengage with the learning if students find the lesson and the activities not as meaningful, interesting, and challenging as expected. As redeemed being in Christ, Christian teachers are called to participate in solving this issue on students. Therefore, this qualitative study aims to see how to solve grade 1 students’ disengagement and to improve grade 1 students’ engagement in learning. Thus, the author found that it is essential for teachers to understand the context, the characteristics, and the needs of the students first to conduct a learning which allows the students to be engaged in a meaningful, interesting, and worthwhile learning experience through teacher’s ability in carrying out the best and appropriate teaching methods along with the teaching media used by the teacher.
