Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the expectations for English teacher’s professional development (PD), how do English teachers develop it in teaching English and the challenges English teachers face in developing it. During one-week observation, the researcher found that English teachers need the effective PD because their knowledge and skills sometimes become outdated or there may be a lack of fit between what the teacher possesses and what the school needs. Then, there is lack of adequate facilities to support their PD. Yet there is no published research on English teachers’ PD in that school and in Faculty of Education–Teachers college. Jesus’ teaching becomes the perfect role model for English teachers to enhance and develop their professionalism. The result is they are expected to use the technology in updating for new ideas and its application in learning and reach the IELTS standard. They have done such professional development in joining PPG, browsing a lot from YouTube, and reading a lot of books. The challenges are higher demands, teachers’ responsibilities besides teaching, and age factor. The researcher suggests the school and teachers have more program on English teacher’s PD besides teaching, evaluating the expectations and its implication.
