Abstract

As responsive Christians in the classroom, students need to show behavioral engagement in the classroom. However, based on researcher’s reflection journal and the result of mentor interview, students in grade III often digress in learning, did not participate, couldn’t follow the instruction, didn’t focus, didn’t work cooperatively, and disengaged in the classroom. Thus, the researcher decided to implement Numbered Heads Together (NHT) method to increase the students’ behavioral engagement. The purpose of this research is to see whether Numbered Heads Together (NHT) can improve the students’ behavioral engagement and how it can improve the students’ behavioral engagement in a Christian School at Bogor. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) using Robert P. Pelton model with three times implementations in grade III in a Christian School at Bogor. These implementations were done started from October 18 until October 26. Data were collected through instruments filled by mentor, peer, students and the researcher. The instruments that used to collect the data were observation checklist, peer observation, students’ questionnaire, and researcher reflection journal. These instruments were analyzed descriptively. Research findings showed that NHT method could improve students’ behavioral engagement of grade III in a Christian School at Bogor because all instruments indicated that NHT method implemented in every implementation and students’ behavioral engagement indicated improvement of the students gradually in each of implementation.
