Abstract
Candida glabrata is an emerging pathogen which causes increasing incidents of Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (VVC) in the recent years. Its resistency towards common antifungal drug, fluconazole, has raised many concerns in healthcare. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are known to possess some antifungal properties. In this research, the ability of LAB to inhibit the growth C. glabrata through the production of organic acids, exopolysaccharides and biosurfactant were assessed. Overlay agar method was used in the assessment of C. glabrata growth inhibition by organic acids and exopolysaccharides of LAB while biofilm inhibition assay was used to study the effect of biosurfactant in preventing the adhesion of this pathogenic yeast. Ten bacteria isolates were used in the examination and each were capable to inhibit the growth of C. glabrata through organic acid and exopolysaccharides as well as to reduce the yeast cells adhesion through biosurfactant production. Among all of the isolates used, extracellular biosurfactant produced by Pediococcus pentosaceus H29 is the most effective in preventing yeast cell adhesion and is capable to reduce cell adhesion by 43 %. This study indicates that the synergistic effects of organic acids, exopolysaccharides and biosurfactant might be an effective measure to prevent and counter VVC caused by C. glabrata.
