Abstract

Late Childhood is the age at which children will learn various basic knowledge and skills considered important for their future survival such as basic writing and reading skills and prepare them to fulfill the Great Commission through evangelism. The children have previously learned letters and vocabulary both verbal and written while still sitting on a kindergarten bench. The problem is, students have different prior knowledge brought from kindergarten so that most students cannot read and write correctly and fluently even, there are some students who do not recognize letters even though there are also some students who can already. The purpose of this writing is to know how the implementation of phonics methods is in the classroom in improving Grade 1 students’ basic writing and reading skills. The result, the teacher uses the phonics method where she asks students to spell word by word with the correct pronunciation when writing or reading in class and increase students’ basic reading and writing skills. In the future, the researcher recommends that future studies look at the types of questions from the thematic textbooks and worksheets, the role of parenting styles and tutoring in helping to improve the basic reading and writing skills of all grade 1 students.
