Abstract

Pendidikan yang utuh harusnya bukan sekadar mewujudnyatakan kecerdasan intelektual, melainkan juga menerapkan pendidikan karakter dalam membentuk peserta didik yang unggul. Pembentukan karakter ini bukan hanya menjadi beban sekolah melainkan juga keluarga. Peserta didik di sekolah hadir dari berbagai latar belakang keluarga, termasuk anak-anak yang dibesarkan di panti asuhan. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis karakter mandiri, jujur, disiplin, toleransi, dan tanggungjawab yang tumbuh pada diri tiga siswa kelas VIII SMP Kristen Lentera Ambarawa yang berasal dari panti asuhan Sumber Kasih Ambarawa. Selain itu juga memaparkan bagaimana peran pengasuh serta macam�macam kebijakan yang dapat mempengaruhi terbentuknya karakter tersebut. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian kualitatif studi kasus dengan instrumen lembar observasi, lembar angket checklist, dan lembar wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa karakter ketiga siswa tumbuh dengan baik hingga sangat baik. Pengasuh menjalankan peran sebagai orang tua, guru, tokoh teladan, dan pengawas bagi anak-anak dengan pola asuh yang otoritatif. Kebijakan-kebijakan panti asuhan Sumber Kasih yang dapat mempengaruhi terbentuknya karakter baik pada diri ketiga siswa ialah penempatan kamar, piket, tidak adanya uang saku, terlibat dalam komunitas di luar panti, tidak adanya jadwal sharing yang baku, tidak ada buku catatan pelanggaran, penetapan jam bangun pagi hingga tidur di malam hari, serta regulasi pemakaian fasilitas panti asuhan berupa printer, modem, dan handphone. / Holistic education should not only influence the intellectual life of the student but should also involve character formation. Character formation is not only the school's responsibility but it is also the family's responsibility. The family background of each student at school is different from one another, including students who are raised in an orphanage. This research explains the independence, honesty, discipline, tolerance, and responsibility which were developed in three eight grade students in Lentera Christian Junior High School in Ambarawa who were raised in the Sumber Kasih Ambarawa orphanage. This paper also describes the role of the care-giver and every rules and procedure which can influence the character of these students. The research method which was used in this research is a qualitative research design case study which used observation sheets, checklist-questionnaire sheets, and interview sheets. The results of this research show that the character of the three students was well-built, but in several cases, they still need some improvement so they could be even better. The care-giver has a role as parent, teacher, role model, and supervisor for the children with an otoritative way of parenting. Every rules and procedures in the orphanage which influence the character of the three students are the placement of bedrooms, schedule, by not giving them money, involve in other communities outside the orphanage, a flexible schedule time for sharing, unnoted mistakes, fixed time for waking up and sleeping, and regulation for using the facilities such as printer, modem, handphone in the orphanage.
