Abstract
Mathematics as one subject in school’s curriculum is designed to learn
about problem solving skill which is a required skill in today’s changing world. In
the reality, it was found that 25 students grade VII, most of them were lack of ability
to solve problem especially in solving mathematics word problem. This situation
indicated that students did not reach the standard of mathematics curriculum.
Responding to this situation, a research to improve student’s problem solving skill
in the mathematics word problem is crucial to be conducted.
The objectives of this research are to find out whether or not the Polya
problem-solving steps are able to improve the students’ problem solving skill and
to find out how the Polya problem-solving steps could improve the students’
problem-solving skill. Research’s method follows the Kemmis and McTaggart
Classroom Action Research (CAR) cycle.
The result gained in this research was student’s problem solving did not
improved. Therefore, the conclusions of this research are that Polya Problem
Solving Steps and their implementation could not improve the student’s problem
solving skill in mathematics word problem. Polya Problem solving steps are very
helpful to work on word problem because the steps are structural and connected
each other. Polya problem solving steps is very effective to create “work through
