Abstract

Lifelong learners are characterized by their ability to make use of every learning opportunity and to organize their own learning. Previous research proves that Indonesian students have not optimized the technology use for learning, nor initiated their own learning, meaning that they have not embraced the traits of lifelong learners. Given this problem, this paper aims to help Christian teachers understand the importance of lifelong learning, the differences between non-Christian and Christian lifelong learners, and the implications. The writer uses qualitative research method with literature review to collect the data where the philosophies of existentialism, pragmatism, and Christianity are presented. The result shows that students need continuous learning to know God and His purposes, and to become more like Christ. Non-Christian and Christian lifelong learners are different in their aim, basis, and motivation. The challenges and opportunities in raising and sustaining Christian lifelong learners then come from the outside and within the students. In the end, fostering Christian lifelong learners is crucial in this fallen world. The writer recommends teachers to consider students’ identity as lifelong learners in conducting learning, and also future researchers to narrow down the research focus into the practical implementation of lifelong learning.
