Abstract
This study addresses the challenge of student disengagement
within the context of a senior high school English class in Bogor. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology, the study aims to explain the concept of student engagement, and
present how respect as a school value can engage student in learning. Drawing upon biblical and philosophical insights, this study recognizes the role of teachers as agents of transformation, aligning with Christian principles of kindness, empathy, and community building. The findings reveal that student engagement is influenced by motivation, learning strategies, and social interactions, with unclear expectations contributing significantly to disengagement. The implementation of respect as a school value yielded positive outcomes, including improved student behavior and
increased classroom engagement, highlighting the potential of core values in establishing clear behavioral expectations and enhancing student engagement. The author recommends future research to compare the effectiveness of different school values in fostering student engagement, exploring their impact on varying age groups and educational settings, and further examining the transformative role of Christian teachers in promoting effective communication and positive classroom atmospheres. Lastly, this study encourages educational institutions to consider implementing values such as respect to create more conducive and engaging
learning environments./ Studi ini berbicara mengenai masalah rendahnya keterlibatan siswa dalam kelas Bahasa Inggris di sebuah sekolah menengah atas di Bogor. Studi ini menggunakan
metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif untuk menjelaskan konsep keterlibatan siswa, mengeksplorasi faktor-faktor yang memengaruhinya, dan melihat bagaimana pengimplementasian respect sebagai nilai sekolah dapat meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ketidakterlibatan siswa dipengaruhi oleh berbagai faktor, seperti motivasi, strategi pembelajaran, dan interaksi sosial. Salah satu faktor utama adalah ketidakjelasan harapan dalam hal tugas, perilaku, dan aturan kelas. Namun, pengimplementasian respect sebagai nilai sekolah berhasil meningkatkan keterlibatan mereka dalam pembelajaran di
kelas. Studi ini merekomendasikan penelitian masa depan yang membandingkan efektivitas berbagai nilai-nilai sekolah selain respect dalam meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa, serta penelitian mendalam mengenai peran guru Kristen sebagai agen perubahan dalam menciptakan komunikasi efektif dan atmosfer positif di kelas. Studi ini juga mendorong lembaga pendidikan untuk mempertimbangkan pengimplementasian nilai-nilai seperti respect sebagai upaya untuk menciptakan lingkungan pembelajaran yang lebih kondusif dan menarik bagi siswa.
