Abstract

The prevalence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) is a serious health concern in developing countries. Creating a culture of patient safety for infection control responsibility should be embedded at all levels of an organization. However, study that showed association between Empathy from healthcare workers and Patient Safety Culture in hospital was limited. The research uniquely investigates the role of empathy and potential mediating role of Patient Safety Culture (PSC) with Perceived Risk of Nosocomial Infection (PRNI) toward Perceived Outcome of Infection Control Performance (PONI). The primary data was gathered using a cross-sectional approach quantitative survey in August 2023 at leading Private Hospital accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI). Data collected from total 260 participants that analyzed by structural equation modeling. Empathy was found to have a significant positive relationship with PSC, yet it could not be proven to be directly related to PRNI. PSC has role as mediator of empathy to PRNI and PONI. PSC was found to have a stronger indirect effect on PONI when through PRNI, compared to directly to PONI. Furthermore, High Order Construct analysis of the PSC two staged approach found that only 4 dimensions of PSC could play a role, namely Teamwork Across Units Teamwork within units, Handoff-Transition, and Feedback about Errors. Empathy alone does not directly impact infection control performance, underscoring the need for mediating factor. The result of this study illuminates the nexus from empathy mediated by patient safety culture and infection control risk toward infection control outcome performances.
