Buku yang menjadi bahan observasi untuk penulisan karya tulis ini adalah buku Seri Pengetahuan Hewan Laut. Buku ini berisikan tentang informasi dasar tentang hewan-hewan laut. Walaupun terdapat pengetahuan yang cocok untuk anak-anak, buku ini masih mempunyai desain karakter dan background yang kurang baik. Beberapa masalah visual yang ditemukan di dalam buku ini yaitu kurangnya pergerakan, angle, “jiwa” pada karakter. Lemahnya identitas karakter utama dan inkonsisten pendekatan atau gaya artistik juga turut terdeteksi di sepanjang halaman-halamannya. Berpijak pada observasi tersebut, makalah ini akan berfokus mengidentifikasi dan membahas tentang permasalahan desain pada karakter dan background di dalam seri buku ini. Fokus tersebut dipilih dalam kaitannya dengan konteks pengerjaan proyek akhir perancangan desain karakter dan latar pada buku Seri Pengetahuan Hewan Laut. Tujuan ini akan dicapai dengan menggunakan teori dan metode yang digunakan oleh Tom Bancroft. / The book 'Seri Pengetahuan Hewan Laut' Series will be redesigned specifically for this paper. Basic knowledge regarding marine animals can be found in this book. Even though this series has a good knowledge about marine animals that is suitable for children, this book still has some visual or design problems regarding character and background designs. The lack of movement, angles, and character’s "soul" are a few of the book's visual problems. Throughout the pages, it is also easy to notice the weak identity of the main character and inconsistent artistic approach or style. Based on these observations, this paper will focus on identifying and discussing design problems for the characters and backgrounds in this book series, and also will be redesigned. The topic of this paper was selected with consideration for the circumstances surrounding the completion of the character and setting designs for the books in the Seri Pengetahuan Hewan Laut Series. The theories and methods used by Tom Bancroft and others will be applied to accomplish this paper.
